UK court jails man over masturbation on train

A Nigerian man, Babatunde Odutola, went from arrest to prison sentence in just 72 hours after a sexual offence on a train travelling towards Manchester in the UK. Odutola was reportedly masturbating in front of a woman.
Odutola, a 36-year-old already registered as a sex offender, was arrested at Manchester Piccadilly railway station after the train arrived there on Friday.
The court handed him a 44-week prison sentence on Monday, 14 September, after he admitted to outraging public decency and violating the terms of a suspended sentence order.
The British Transport Police revealed that the incident happened at about 7 p.m. as the train travelled through Cheshire towards Manchester.

Odutola reportedly approached the woman as she travelled alone, staring at her in a way that made her feel intimidated. Police said he then turned aggressive when she refused to respond to him.
He then exposed himself and masturbated in front of her from his wheelchair. Police said he looked at the woman and demanded she come over.
A fellow passenger helped the woman leave the carriage. CCTV footage later captured Odutola carrying on with the behaviour as other passengers moved through the carriage.
Evidence brought case to court within days
The speed of the case was supported by evidence gathered after the arrest. Police said Odutola denied the allegations during his interview, but later pleaded guilty when presented with CCTV footage and several witness accounts.
Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou said the woman had been singled out by Odutola during her journey.
“Odutola is clearly an incredibly dangerous individual and his disturbing behaviour must have been terrifying for the victim, who he singled out when she was travelling on her own,” he said.
Police also said Odutola had a previous record of offending and was already on the register for sex offenders before the train incident.
“This was not a one-off from Odutola, who was already a registered sex offender, and this type of alarming, predatory behaviour simply will not be tolerated on our railways,” Christoforou said.
The detective said Odutola’s conduct would be pursued through the railway policing system.
Christoforou also asked passengers to report sexual offences they witness or experience during rail journeys.
“If you experience or witness these crimes on the railway, please report it to us by texting 61016. We will always take action,” he said.
The police said the investigation resulted in Odutola being jailed within 72 hours of the incident, taking the case from the train carriage on Friday evening to a prison sentence on Monday.
