An old internet video causing widespread panic among citizens contains false claims about a hack on the National Identification Number (NIN) database, federal officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the government body in charge of citizen data, declared that its central storage system remains fully secure.
Head of Corporate Communications Kayode Adegoke explained that the circulating video contains old, recycled rumors from 2024 that were already disproved. Officials warned that spreading unverified reports causes needless fear across the country.

To make identity checks safer, the commission introduced a new service called NIN Authentication (NINAuth).
This platform allows individuals to confirm their identity on mobile phones, web apps, and government network channels without exposing their raw NIN numbers.
People can use this tool to complete SIM card registrations, passport applications, tax payments, and bank transactions.
The platform asks for clear permission from the cardholder before sharing personal details with any organisation for Know Your Customer checks.
The new service acts as the official bridge between user applications and central computer servers. It gives citizens full power over who sees their private details during routine identity checks.
Laws guard personal information
This setup obeys two major privacy regulations: the NIMC Act of 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023.
Both statutes mandate that public agencies manage private records lawfully, fairly, and transparently.
The commission is working with security agencies to stop false rumors and improve public information channels.
