A Nigerian man has shared an emotional account of why he and his former girlfriend cancelled their wedding after dating for three years.
The man, identified on X as @Wizeinthebeat, said they met while studying at university.
According to him, she was outspoken in class while he was quiet. Their different personalities did not stop them from starting a relationship.
They later began planning their marriage after completing university.
The woman’s mother reportedly called him her son. His father was also saving money for the bride price.
The couple selected December 16 as their wedding date.
Before their formal introduction, their pastor advised them to undergo medical tests.
The man claimed the results showed that they both had the AS sickle cell trait.
He said a nurse informed them about the possibility of having a child with sickle cell disease.
The woman later called him in tears and asked, “Do you want our children to suffer, babe?”
The couple reportedly discussed their options with relatives, pastors and doctors.
They eventually decided to end the relationship and cancel the wedding.
The man said he spent the planned wedding date alone in his room, looking at the suit he had bought.
He added that his former girlfriend has since married someone with an AA genotype.
“I still wish her well. I heard she’s married now. To an AA. I’m still learning how to love someone without seeing her face in it,” he wrote.
When two people with the AS trait have a child, each pregnancy carries a 25% chance of the child having sickle cell disease.
There is also a 50% chance of the child having the AS trait and a 25% chance of the child having the AA genotype.
These probabilities apply separately to every pregnancy. Couples can speak with a qualified doctor or genetic counsellor to understand their options.
