Nigeria is set to get a new national minimum wage as the government moves to ease economic hardship on workers.
A permanent secretary at the labour ministry said Tuesday that talks are underway to nail down when negotiations will happen, though no date has been announced yet.
Background discussions have started, and the public will be informed once things are ready to be shared.
The government is also working with workers in sectors where pay disputes haven’t been settled.
This pressure comes from labour unions wanting the current 70,000 naira minimum wage, set in 2024, to be reviewed.
Workers are pushing for it to jump to 500,000 naira and want an immediate wage boost.
They’re also demanding petrol prices drop to 500 naira per litre.
