2027: Amaechi Challenges Tinubu, Vows to Dump Atiku and Campaign for President If Petrol Drops to ₦600

ADC Vice-Presidential Candidate Questions Tinubu’s ‘Age of Prosperity’ Claim, Demands Evidence of Economic Improvement

African Democratic Congress (ADC) Vice-Presidential candidate, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the rising cost of living, declaring that he would withdraw from the presidential ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and campaign for Tinubu in 2027 if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on October 2, 2026, while reacting to President Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the President claimed that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity”.

Questioning the reality of the President’s economic claims, the former Rivers State governor asked whether Nigerians had experienced any meaningful reduction in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other basic necessities.

“Has any price come down, has anything changed?” Amaechi asked.

Using petrol prices as a measure of the administration’s economic performance, Amaechi said he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to verify whether the price had dropped to the ₦600 benchmark.

“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel, I will go myself. If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he declared.

He further challenged those who doubted his statement to accompany him with cameras to a filling station, insisting that he was ready to take the political step if the condition was met.

“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel, and I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as a vice presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down,” he said.

Amaechi’s remarks add to the growing political debate over the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, particularly the impact of petrol prices on transportation, food costs, household spending and businesses.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the ADC chieftain’s challenge has turned the President’s claim of an emerging age of prosperity into a question of measurable economic relief for ordinary Nigerians.

The central issue raised by Amaechi is whether the economic gains highlighted by the Federal Government are translating into lower living costs and improved purchasing power for citizens.
