A 33-year-old man, Monsuru Musa, has been arrested in Abuja after allegedly writing a promotion examination on behalf of his father, an employee of the FCT Fire Service.
Monsuru was caught on Wednesday, October 7, during the third day of the promotion examination organised by the FCT Civil Service Commission at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The security personnel deployed to monitor the exercise, reportedly at the instance of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, apprehended him during the examination.
According to a statement by the minister’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, Monsuru initially told security officials that his father was sick but was somewhere within the university premises.
He reportedly later admitted that his father, Musa Mohammed, had instructed him to sit for the promotion examination on his behalf.
The questioning also produced conflicting accounts about the father’s age.
Monsuru reportedly told the security operatives that his father was between 67 and 68 years old. However, Musa Mohammed said he would turn 60 in February 2027, making him 59 at the time of the examination.
The father further stated that he completed primary school in 1977 and secondary school in 1982.
Both father and son were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation after making statements to operatives of the Department of State Services.
The authorities are expected to investigate the alleged impersonation and the conflicting information surrounding the father’s age and eligibility for the promotion examination.
