Bayo Onanuga tackles Amaechi over mother’s death claim, recalls former governor’s comment on Atiku

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, following Amaechi’s claim about Tinubu’s economic policies.
Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, recently alleged that the rising cost of medication under the Tinubu administration made it difficult for him to buy drugs for his mother before her death. He made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The former governor maintained that his mother had been healthy before Tinubu assumed office but that the cost of her medication later became difficult to afford.
Reacting to the claim, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike criticised Amaechi for linking his mother’s death to Tinubu’s policies and accused him of bringing the issue into political arguments.
Onanuga subsequently weighed in on the controversy in a post on X, questioning Amaechi’s approach to politics and his partnership with Atiku.
The presidential aide also referenced Amaechi’s previous comments about Atiku, recalling that the former governor had described his principal as unelectable.
“Amaechi has shown how terribly low he can go to play his politics. Such a man cannot be entrusted, along with his boss, who has a box full of corruption and money-laundering cases, to pilot the affairs of our country.”
In any way, we need not worry. Amaechi had said that his principal, Atiku Abubakar, is unelectable.”
Onanuga’s comments come ahead of the 2027 general election, with the ADC ticket positioning Atiku and Amaechi as presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
