Benue ex-administration must explain over ₦3trn in revenue, Commissioner says

Benue State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Solomon Iorpev, has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its allies to account for more than ₦3 trillion allegedly received by the state’s previous administration over eight years.

Iorpev made the demand in a statement dated Friday, 23 October 2026, as he criticised the opposition coalition for demanding accountability from the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia over monthly allocations of ₦30 billion.

Iorpev questions eight years of state revenue

The commissioner alleged that the previous administration received regular federal allocations, Abacha loot payments, Paris Club refunds, bailout funds and loans during its eight years in power.

He also included internally generated revenue (IGR), which refers to money collected by the state from its own sources, in his calculation of the funds received by the former government.

Iorpev put the total at more than ₦3 trillion and questioned the projects completed with the money. He claimed that a roughly repaired 20-kilometre road was the only major achievement the former administration could present to the public.

The commissioner also listed unpaid salaries and pensions, unpaved roads, failed buildings and debts running into hundreds of millions of naira among the problems he attributed to the previous government.

He did not provide a breakdown of the alleged ₦3 trillion or identify the individual allocations, refunds, loans and revenues that made up the total.

Taraku Mills also features in criticism also features in criticism

Iorpev challenged the former governor’s explanation that electricity supply caused the collapse of Taraku Mills, which he alleged had become a channel for diverting public resources.

He questioned why the former governor had not addressed the electricity problem during his eight years in office.

The commissioner accused the PDP and its partners in the Rainbow Coalition of applying different standards when demanding accountability from Alia’s government and defending their own record in office.

He said the opposition should account for its previous mandate before seeking another one from voters.

Iorpev, however, acknowledged that demanding accountability was a legitimate position. He maintained that such demands should also apply to those who previously controlled the state’s resources.
