Ebonyi political attack leaves one dead, three shot

One person has died and three others have been injured in an alleged attack on the convoy of a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly candidate in Ebonyi State as police begin investigating the shooting and burning of a vehicle in Ezza South.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death of one person following an alleged attack on the convoy of Offia-Nwali, the NDC candidate for Ezza South Constituency in the state.

Three other people sustained gunshot wounds in the incident, which occurred at about 4 p.m. on Thursday in Amaezekwe community, Ezza South Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the casualties to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. He said the command deployed operatives after receiving a distress call about a disturbance in the community.

“Upon arrival, the operatives found four individuals with gunshot wounds and a burnt vehicle,” Ukandu said.

He added that one victim was confirmed dead at the hospital, while the three survivors were receiving medical treatment.

Offia-Nwali alleged that suspected political thugs attacked his motorcade and set his Toyota Hilux ablaze. He said he and members of his entourage escaped without injuries.

The candidate condemned the violence and appealed to young people in Ebonyi not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to pursue personal interests.

“No political ambition is worth the life of any young person,” he said.

Although police confirmed the shooting, casualties and burnt vehicle, the available account does not establish who carried out the attack or what prompted it. The claim that political thugs were responsible remains an allegation and requires verification through the police investigation.

The key issue now is whether investigators can establish the motive, identify those responsible and determine whether the violence was connected to the candidate’s political activities. The available report did not disclose any arrests or provide details of suspects.

The incident raises concerns about the safety of political candidates and their supporters as preparations for the 2027 general election approach.

Violence against campaign teams can intimidate political participants and undermine citizens’ ability to engage freely in democratic activities. However, the available information does not establish that this incident forms part of a wider pattern of election-related attacks in Ebonyi.

The investigation should, therefore, establish the sequence of events, examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and vehicle fire, and determine whether the attack was politically motivated. A clear account of the findings would help separate verified facts from competing claims and identify any individuals who should face prosecution.

The police had not announced arrests or disclosed a motive in the report available on Friday.

The immediate priorities are to support the injured, establish the circumstances of the fatality and hold anyone found responsible accountable under the law. A prompt, evidence-based investigation is essential to prevent speculation from replacing facts and to reinforce public confidence in the protection of political participation.
