‘Exit 2027 presidential race,’ APC campaign council tells Obi

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council called on the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential contest following verified reports of financial liabilities left during his tenure as Anambra State governor.
Campaign spokesperson Dele Alake issued the demand in a statement on October 9, 2026, reminding Obi of his public promise to step down from future presidential contests if state financial records proved his administration left liabilities behind.
Alake stated that Anambra’s financial documents clear up any doubt regarding those liabilities, leaving Obi bound by his earlier pledge to pull out of the 2027 contest.
Controversy over undocumented victory claims
The demand for Obi’s exit from the 2027 race comes alongside criticism of his recent broadcast comments on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
NewDailyPrime had reported that, during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Obi claimed he won the 2023 election while acknowledging that he lacked physical proof to back up the assertion.
“I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence,” Obi said during the broadcast.

Alake described Obi’s remarks as a troubling display of delusion and a disrespect for facts.
“By Obi’s logic, it is acceptable to make outrageous claims without a shred of evidence or verisimilitude. For him, it is in order and acceptable to make allegations without substantiation or to act on impulse by airing unsubstantiated conjectures.
This is deeply troubling. There is simply no end to Obi’s posturing and no end to his shenanigans and farce,” he said.
He questioned where the former governor obtains his information, noting that making major claims without substantiation is unacceptable for anyone aspiring to lead the country.
Ruling party defends electoral verdict
The campaign council noted that official records from electoral authorities and court decisions already established the true winner of the election.
Alake emphasised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the election decisively, with the outcome confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and affirmed by both the election tribunal and the Supreme Court.
The campaign spokesperson added that President Tinubu continues to execute key economic and social programs, expanding infrastructure, creating job opportunities, supporting local businesses, and improving education and healthcare across Nigeria.
The campaign council maintained that Obi, having finished third in the 2023 poll and failed to present evidence to back his election claims, should act honourably by fulfilling his word to step aside ahead of 2027.
“We again call on Peter Obi to act honourably and honour his earlier pledge to exit the 2027 presidential race if it is proven that his administration left behind liabilities in Anambra State—a fact now clearly established by the state’s financial records,” Alake said.
