I Have Four Children And A Wife To Take Care Of” – Bolt Driver Questions Low Fares As He Lists Family Expenses
A Bolt driver has lamented the financial pressure of supporting his family while working on the ride-hailing platform, as Bolt and inDrive drivers in Lagos protest against low fares and the rising cost of living.
The driver explained that his earnings must cover the needs of his wife and four children, alongside expenses associated with operating his vehicle.
“I have four children and a wife to take care of. I pay their school fees, provide food for them, and still have to service my car,” he said.
The protesting drivers are demanding an increase in fares, arguing that rising petrol prices, vehicle repairs, insurance and other operating expenses have made it increasingly difficult to earn a sustainable income.
“They should increase our prices for us. We are suffering and dying in pain,” one of the drivers said.
The protest comes as the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos State Council, has called for an indefinite withdrawal of services on Bolt and inDrive from Monday, October 12, 2026. The union is demanding a review of fares, a cap on platform commissions and improved welfare for drivers.
Bolt has expressed willingness to engage with the union and proposed a meeting to discuss the drivers’ concerns.
The development has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians sympathising with the drivers while others argued that their grievances should be directed at the government over rising living and operating costs.
