Lagos bridge horror: Container truck kills four, injures 16

Four men have died and 16 others sustained injuries after a container-laden truck overturned onto a commercial bus on Berger Bridge in Lagos, exposing the deadly consequences of heavy-vehicle crashes, excessive speed and dangerous driving on busy roads.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, inward Eleko, when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME-589 ZU.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling uphill at excessive speed when its driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a collision. The truck and its container then overturned onto the bus, crushing the vehicle beneath the load.
“The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four (4) adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while sixteen (16) other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the agency said.
LASEMA deployed its Beta Whales Team from the Epe Base after receiving a distress call. Emergency personnel worked alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the area and assist victims.
The injured passengers received first aid before being taken to Epe General Hospital for further treatment. A private crane was also secured to lift the overturned truck and container so responders could safely recover the bodies. Recovery operations were ongoing, with traffic controls introduced around the affected section.

Two more crashes compound Lagos road concerns
The Berger Bridge tragedy was one of three road incidents handled by LASEMA on Wednesday, with the other crashes occurring in Agege and Igando.
In Agege, a truck struck a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School, along Old Abeokuta Road, before mounting the median and obstructing traffic. LASEMA attributed the incident to reckless driving. No casualties were recorded, and the road was reopened after recovery operations.
In Igando, a DAF truck collided with a Toyota Corolla at Lanre Bus Stop along LASU-Igando Road. Preliminary information indicated that traffic had accumulated because a vehicle had broken down on the opposite side of the road. The DAF truck was reportedly driving against traffic when the collision occurred.
The Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate. No fatalities were reported in that crash.
Heavy vehicles, heavier consequences
The three incidents highlight different risks on Lagos roads: loss of control, reckless manoeuvres and driving against traffic. The Berger Bridge crash was particularly severe because a heavy container fell directly onto a passenger vehicle and left those inside exposed to the full force of the impact.
LASEMA advised motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving against traffic, maintain their vehicles properly and refrain from dangerous manoeuvres.
The cause of the fatal collision has yet to be conclusively established, as the agency’s account describes the findings as preliminary. Further investigation will be necessary to determine the circumstances of the crash and whether any traffic or vehicle-safety regulations were breached.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
Besides the immediate rescue operation, the tragedy underscores the need for responsible heavy-vehicle driving, effective enforcement and strict attention to roadworthiness.
On congested urban routes, one driver’s loss of control can leave dozens of passengers paying the price.
