Madrid run riot ahead of Barcelona showdown

Real Madrid dismantled RB Leipzig 4-1 to maintain their perfect Champions League record as Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande delivered late fireworks before Sunday’s El Clásico.

Real Madrid sent a warning to Barcelona ahead of their highly anticipated La Liga clash by sweeping aside RB Leipzig 4-1 on Wednesday, securing a third consecutive victory in the UEFA Champions League.

Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande scored for José Mourinho’s side at the Santiago Bernabéu, extending Madrid’s winning run across all competitions to four matches.

The emphatic result offers Madrid a timely confidence boost before Sunday’s meeting with their fierce domestic rivals. The Spanish giants have endured an unsettled start to the season, but their European campaign has provided a welcome source of consistency.

Silva breaks the deadlock

Leipzig initially threatened to spoil the evening. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced an excellent low save to deny Romulo Cardoso, keeping Madrid level during a cautious opening period.

Vinícius Júnior later tested Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, who also stopped Güler’s effort. However, the visitors could not maintain their resistance until the interval.

Federico Valverde cut the ball back for Güler, whose shot was saved. Silva reacted quickest to the rebound and forced the ball over the line, registering his first goal for Madrid since joining the club in the summer.

The breakthrough changed the contest. Madrid returned from half-time with greater purpose and doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half.

Jude Bellingham delivered a cross towards the far post, and Mbappé directed the ball across goal. Güler held off his marker before turning it into the net in the 52nd minute.

Mbappé and Diomande seal the rout

Madrid continued to press for a third, with Valverde testing Vandevoordt again. Mbappé also threatened before the hosts finally extended their lead.

Diomande, introduced as a substitute for Vinícius with about 20 minutes remaining, supplied the pass that allowed Mbappé to bend a precise finish into the net.

Leipzig briefly responded when Tidiam Gomis capitalised on a lapse in Madrid’s defence and beat Courtois. The goal offered the German side little respite.

Diomande then produced the evening’s final flourish, smashing a volley from Brahim Díaz’s cross into the top corner. It was his third goal in four appearances, further strengthening his case for a more prominent role.

El Clásico comes into focus

The victory carries significance beyond the three European points. Madrid have now won their opening three Champions League matches, while Barcelona suffered a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, according to the report.

Madrid’s record 15 European titles underline their pedigree, but recent seasons without a major trophy have increased the pressure to deliver silverware.

Sunday’s encounter with Barcelona will provide a more demanding test of their domestic credentials. Madrid’s improved attacking rhythm is encouraging, although defensive lapses such as the one that allowed Leipzig to score will require attention.

As for Mourinho, the challenge now is to turn European momentum into a statement victory against Madrid’s greatest rivals. A win would strengthen confidence in his team’s progress; another inconsistent domestic performance would revive questions about whether their European form can translate into sustained success in Spain.
