“OBI! OBI! OBI!” – Warri Youths Reject Independence Run Shirts Allegedly Bearing Tinubu’s Image, Threaten To Boycott Event

Youths gathered at PTI Junction in Warri, Delta State, for a planned free 5KM Independence Day Run reportedly protested after organisers began distributing “Soft Nigeria” branded polo shirts that participants said featured President Bola Tinubu’s image.

Videos circulating on X showed some of the youths tearing the shirts and setting some of them on fire, while others chanted “OBI! OBI! OBI!”

Some participants reportedly threatened to boycott the jog, walk and cycle event, with the development generating reactions online.

The youths were said to have expected a free Independence Day fitness event but became upset after receiving the branded shirts, which they interpreted as political promotion.

SoftNigeria describes itself as a youth-focused movement and says it is involved in government-awareness campaigns and voter sensitisation across Nigeria.

PTI Junction is located along PTI Road in the Warri/Effurun area of Delta State.

The reference to “Sheriff” in some of the online reactions appears to relate to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, although the videos and posts reviewed did not independently establish his involvement in the event.

The reported incident has not yet been independently confirmed by major traditional news organisations. At the time of publication, the available evidence consists mainly of eyewitness-style videos and social media posts from people discussing the confrontation.
