Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared Nigeria the worst place to be born and blamed the APC-led administration for the worsening state of the country.
He said this in his Independence Day message on Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.
Obi said that despite the promises the ruling party made during the 2023 elections, poverty, insecurity, unemployment and hunger have kept getting worse.
He said the country faces deepening challenges in almost every critical sector of national life.
The former Anambra State governor claimed more than 140 million Nigerians are living in poverty and hardship, while over 80 million children are out of school.
He also raised concern over growing cases of banditry and kidnapping and the recent death of 37 young people.
He warned that about 40 million Nigerians could face extreme food shortages before the end of the year.
He also pointed to high infant and maternal mortality rates and described youth unemployment and drug prevalence as alarming.
