After the report, the Commissioner of Police for Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered that the case be moved to the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, known as the VCRU. He directed the unit to investigate further and to arrest those responsible.
The VCRU then began an investigation based on intelligence. The police say operatives gathered information over a long period and used technology. This produced leads that led to the operation on 2 October.
What the suspects told police
The police say they held an identification parade as part of their early investigation. In such a parade, witnesses look at a group of people and say whether they can recognise any suspect among them.
The command says the surviving victims identified the three arrested men as members of the gang that attacked the house.
The police also say the suspects confessed. The command says they admitted taking part in the robbery. It says they admitted taking valuables worth about ₦3.493 million. It says they admitted killing Mrs Rukayat during the operation.
The men, according to the police, also confessed to other robberies. They name the Wofun Olodo and Akobo areas of Ibadan as the sites of those incidents. The command says this gave investigators more leads.
The police have not said whether the suspects have been charged or when they will appear in court.
What readers should know
The three men are suspects. The police describe them as members of the gang, but the press release does not report any court ruling on the case.
CP Olugbenga has told the VCRU and other units of the command to work harder to find the rest of the gang.
