Uba Sani: Northern Leaders Since 1999 Must Share Blame for Region’s Backwardness

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has faulted successive political leaders in Northern Nigeria over the region’s persistent developmental challenges, insisting that President Bola Tinubu should not be held solely responsible for its backwardness.
Sani said political officeholders who have governed or served in government across the North since 1999 must accept responsibility for the region’s challenges, particularly its education crisis.
The governor cited figures from 2023, claiming that Northern Nigeria accounted for 70 per cent of children out of school in the country.
“President Tinubu cannot be blamed for how backward the North is. As of 2023, the North accounted for 70% of children out of school. If you have ruled or been in government in the northern part of the country since 1999, you share in this blame,” he said.
His remarks underscore the need for accountability among successive administrations in the North, particularly over persistent educational deficits and the region’s broader development challenges.
