“You Love Your Child & Still Miss Who You Were Before” — Podcast Episodes Every Woman Should Listen To At Least Once

Being a woman is already a lot. Being a Nigerian woman? Even more.

There’s the pressure to marry before your aunties start asking questions at every family function, figuring out money while everyone assumes you have it together, becoming a mum and wondering where you went, or simply trying to build a life that actually feels like yours.

Sometimes, you just need to hear another woman say, “Wait, you too?”

So we dug through various podcasts for conversations about aspects of womanhood we don’t talk about enough. From money and motherhood to relationships, friendship, burnout, identity and starting over, these 16 episodes get into the experiences that can make you pause and think, “Ah. So it’s not just me.”

Money can come with a lot of shame, especially when you feel like everyone your age is doing better than you. This conversation gets into financial anxiety, feeling inadequate because of money, budgeting and learning how to actually take control of your finances.

Leaving a marriage can mean rebuilding much more than your relationship status. Venita talks about divorce, motherhood, money and finding herself again, including what it took to rebuild her life after choosing to walk away.

Having a baby can change the way you see yourself, your marriage and your life. Simi Drey talks about the parts of motherhood that don’t always make it into the announcement posts, including adjusting to a completely new identity while still trying to be yourself.

Making more money doesn’t automatically make you feel financially secure. Adeife talks about freelancing, business, wealth and the work that goes into changing your relationship with money, especially when you’re trying to build financial independence from scratch.

Becoming a mother at a young age can change the trajectory of a woman’s life, but it doesn’t have to determine the rest of it. Jaddy talks about young motherhood, family, relationships and rebuilding her life after a beginning that didn’t go according to plan.

Nigerian women are often taught to endure pain before they’re taught to understand their bodies. This conversation gets into childbirth, FGM, fibroids, period health, sexual health, and the ways women are still denied the information and agency they need to make decisions about their own bodies.

This conversation gets into sexual and domestic violence, the pressure to protect family secrets, and why “but they’re family” should never be an excuse to ignore abuse.

Being the woman everyone can depend on sounds nice until you’re exhausted from being that woman everywhere. Cassandra Ukaobi talks about burnout and the pressure women face to keep showing up for work, family and everyone else, even when they desperately need to stop.
