2027: NDC tells Nigerians to become polling agents, protect votes

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked young Nigerians to serve as “polling agents and Vanguards at all levels” to protect votes during elections.

The party said their presence at polling units would help safeguard the people’s choice and reduce the chances of electoral malpractice.

The Director-General of the NDC National Campaign Council, Mallam Ibrahim Abdulkarim, made the appeal in a message issued on Saturday.

Party cites Osun election experience

Abdulkarim urged young Nigerians to concentrate on voter mobilisation and avoid disinformation capable of weakening their participation in the electoral process.

He said the experience of the Osun elections showed that high voter turnout could make electoral manipulation more difficult.

“The more voters we bring out, the harder it becomes for anyone to rig the outcome,” he said.

The campaign council identified nearly 50 million undecided voters as a group open to persuasion.

It asked party members and supporters to take the NDC’s message to communities, campuses and markets where opposition parties struggle to reach voters.

Abdulkarim also encouraged them to introduce the party’s presidential candidate, promote its logo and persuade people who had never voted to participate in elections.

NDC warns against hostility towards INEC

The campaign council cautioned supporters against treating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its officials as enemies.

It said disinformation could create hostility towards the electoral body and undermine efforts to secure credible elections.

“Not everyone at INEC is opposed to a free and fair election,” Abdulkarim said.

He disclosed that professionals within the party and the Presidential Campaign Council were already engaging the commission on electoral issues.

He asked supporters to trust the party leaders handling the engagement and avoid actions that could expose INEC officials to harm.

The NDC also raised concerns about what it called attempts by some interests within the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to force unnecessary information and communications technology (ICT) procurements on INEC.

It warned supporters against allowing public pressure to become a tool for advancing such interests.

The campaign council advised members to leave institutional discussions to those handling them and concentrate on voter mobilisation.

It also expressed support for INEC, saying Nigeria needed free, fair and credible elections.

The council said it was ready to support measures that would protect the integrity of the electoral process.

WHAT READERS SHOULD KNOW

The NDC’s mobilisation appeal focuses on three activities: persuading undecided voters, encouraging first-time voters to participate and recruiting young Nigerians as polling agents and Vanguards.

The party identified nearly 50 million undecided voters as a potential voting group.

It also wants supporters to protect their votes through disciplined participation and increased turnout.
