Ekiti Commissioner rejects allegation linking Oyebanji to Sowore attack

Ekiti State Commissioner for Information Taiwo Olatunbosun has rejected allegations linking Governor Biodun Oyebanji to the reported attack on activist Omoyele Sowore in Ado-Ekiti.

Olatunbosun accused the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) of making politically motivated allegations without evidence, warning that its intervention could prejudice the ongoing police investigation.

On Saturday, Olatunbosun said the council had no basis to hold Oyebanji personally responsible for any eventuality involving Sowore.

He said the Ekiti State Government had dissociated itself from the incident and asked the police to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Police confirm arrests over Ado-Ekiti incident

Olatunbosun cited the Ekiti State Police Command‘s preliminary account, which indicated that the incident began with an altercation at a food outlet.

He said the police had rescued Sowore, attended to his injuries and arrested suspects over the disturbance.

The commissioner questioned why the OYC would implicate the governor before investigators established what happened.

He maintained that allegations of executive involvement required verifiable evidence, not political accusations or threats.

Olatunbosun also recalled Sowore’s previous visit to Ekiti last year, which he said passed without any reported attack or harassment.

He questioned the basis for immediately attributing the latest incident to the state government.

Olatunbosun defends governor’s political record

The commissioner cited Oyebanji’s re-election victory and the peaceful conduct of the governorship campaign and election as evidence of the political environment under his administration.

He questioned what advantage the governor would gain from sponsoring violence against a political opponent or visitor.

Olatunbosun also said the governor had accommodated criticism and divergent political views, insisting that political disagreements could not justify violence.

He cautioned Sowore against using activism to justify conduct that infringes on other citizens’ rights.

He, however, maintained that the activist’s safety and freedom of expression must be protected.

Olatunbosun asked the OYC to allow the police to complete their investigation and establish individual responsibility.

WHAT READERS SHOULD KNOW

The OYC’s reported accusation was published by SaharaReporters on Saturday. The police investigation had produced preliminary findings and arrests, but Olatunbosun said responsibility should be determined through the investigation.

He maintained that anyone found culpable should face prosecution, while Oyebanji should not be judged on allegations unsupported by evidence.
