South-East governors endorse Tinubu for second term, cite state projects

The governors of four South-East states have used projects funded by increased state revenues to justify their support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Peter Mbah of Enugu, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi and Charles Soludo of Anambra made the case at an APC women’s rally in Enugu on Saturday.

Their arguments were about the economic reforms introduced by Tinubu, which they credited with giving state governments more money for infrastructure, healthcare, education and workers’ welfare.

The rally at Okpara Square was organised by the APC Presidential Campaign Council’s Women Mobilisation Directorate. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu flagged off an empowerment programme intended to reach 5,000 women across the South-East.

Mbah used projects in Enugu to explain why he believed the President deserved another term.

He listed Smart Green Schools, Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres and other initiatives undertaken by his administration within three years.

The governor said the projects had benefited from additional resources made available to states through Tinubu’s economic reforms.

He also appealed to the Igbo electorate to support the President, saying the region had built businesses and relationships outside the South-East.

Mbah said voters should not abandon the current administration before it completed its work.

Imo governor lists road projects and workers’ benefits

Uzodimma presented a similar argument using infrastructure and payments to public workers in Imo State.

He said his administration had been able to pay salaries and pensions consistently, including 13th-month salaries, because of the state’s improved financial position.

The governor also listed four road connections: Okigwe to Owerri, Umuahia to Owerri, Orlu to Owerri and Owerri to Port Harcourt.

He credited Tinubu with expanding infrastructure development in the South-East, including roads, electricity, healthcare and education.

Uzodimma said the Igbo had experienced marginalisation for more than 60 years but were now witnessing political inclusion under the President.

“We are now seeing good roads, electricity, health reforms as well as educational reforms in the country. A winning team must not be changed,” he said.

Nwifuru also endorsed Tinubu’s second-term ambition, declaring that the re-election of the President was the main mission for Ndigbo in 2027.

He identified the APC as the only party with a clear manifesto capable of sustaining national development and advancing Igbo interests.

The Ebonyi governor dismissed suggestions that he was involved in a political coalition and reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC.

Soludo, represented by his deputy, Gilbert Ibezim, also backed Tinubu’s re-election, saying the South-East could benefit from continued cooperation with the Federal Government.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu took the argument further, connecting the region’s political support for Tinubu with its ambition to produce a Nigerian president.

He said the Igbo had not produced a president in the past 60 years and were not bound by any one-term arrangement for an Igbo presidency.

Kalu called for political alliances across the country to help the region achieve a full two-term presidency in the future.

He also commended Tinubu for establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC), which he said would help address the region’s development challenges.

First Lady takes empowerment campaign to South-East

Beyond the 2027 endorsements, the rally introduced an empowerment programme for 5,000 women across the region.

Mbah disclosed that Oluremi Tinubu had supported more than 2,000 women in Enugu within 48 hours, including paying hospital bills.

He said the new initiative would extend assistance to women across the five South-East states.

The First Lady presented the programme as part of the APC government’s attempt to turn its promises into practical assistance.

She also conveyed Tinubu’s message that Nigerians should not lose hope because of the economic difficulties associated with his reforms.

“Mr. President said I should greet everyone. We have done reforms and we are now in prosperity. Don’t allow anyone to deceive you. The worst is over. We are stepping into prosperity,” she said.

She compared the economic reform process to childbirth, saying the pain of labour eventually leads to delivery.

Oluremi Tinubu also asked women to mobilise voters for her husband’s re-election and other APC candidates in 2027. She told them to assess political aspirants through their records on empowerment and development.
