Prominent stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State have dismissed reports suggesting that party chieftains met with Bola Tinubu to endorse consensus governorship candidates for the South-West ahead of the 2027 elections.
The stakeholders described the report as “speculative and misleading,” insisting it was merely an attempt to gauge public reaction and pressure other aspirants into stepping down.
According to them, the narrative—published by a national newspaper—was a calculated move aimed at deceiving party members and weakening internal competition. They stressed that any such arrangement would be “dead on arrival,” pointing out that the amended Electoral Act clearly outlines the process for adopting consensus candidates.
The controversial report had named Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Ogun West Senator Olamilekan Adeola, and Oyo South Senator Sharafadeen Alli as preferred consensus candidates for their respective states.
Reacting, APC chieftain Dr. Akin Ogunsanwo dismissed the claims as the handiwork of politicians uncomfortable with a transparent primary process. He clarified that the President was not physically present at the alleged meeting where such decisions were said to have been made.
Ogunsanwo also expressed concern that what was merely a post-Ramadan courtesy visit to the President had been misrepresented to push what he described as “toxic narratives” aimed at discouraging other aspirants.
Similarly, Abeokuta-based stakeholder Adio Opeloyeru questioned the credibility of the report, noting that it lacked logical consistency. He argued that President Tinubu would not engage in such political decisions without consulting state party leaders and aspirants.
Opeloyeru also criticised Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, accusing him of pushing aggressively for the acceptance of Senator Adeola as Ogun’s consensus candidate. He described the move as unrealistic and out of touch with the political realities in the state.
He further dismissed claims that Governor Dapo Abiodun had endorsed any succession plan, calling such suggestions “a fabrication” intended to create false impressions of political alignment.
In a related development, the Ogun West Renaissance Movement (OWRM), through its coordinator Amos Adegbite, rejected what it termed attempts to impose an “outsider” on the Yewa people. The group maintained that it would only support a candidate who emerges through a credible and democratic process.
The stakeholders collectively reaffirmed their commitment to free, fair, and transparent primaries, insisting that Ogun APC members would resist any attempt to impose candidates ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
