A High Court in Akure has sentenced 21-year-old domestic worker, Emmanuel Akpan, to death by hanging for the murder of his employer, Febisola Adedayo.
Akpan was convicted on charges of conspiracy and murder under the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State.
The prosecution told the court that the crime occurred on March 29, 2021, at the victim’s residence in Ondo town. Akpan, alongside a co-defendant, Goodness James Akpe, was accused of plotting and carrying out the attack that led to Adedayo’s death.
Evidence presented in court showed that the victim was brutally assaulted and killed before valuables—including ATM cards, mobile phones, and a generator—were stolen. The attackers also attempted to set the house ablaze in a bid to conceal the crime.
In his judgment, Justice Rotimi Olamide ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. He noted that witness testimonies were consistent and credible, while the defendant’s confessional statements further established guilt.
Describing the act as cruel and inhumane—particularly as the victim had previously supported the defendants—the court found Akpan guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.
However, the court discharged and acquitted Akpe, citing insufficient evidence directly linking him to the murder.
