Woman Shot Dead in Port Harcourt, Police Launch Investigation

The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder of a woman, Special Basington, who was fatally shot after leaving a hotel in Port Harcourt.

CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer, told reporters on Friday that the incident occurred on March 21, 2026, at the Total Gospel area off Odili Road. The attack was reported to the Abuloma Police Division by a resident, Divine Anyanwu.

According to the police, Basington had boarded a ride-hailing vehicle from a hotel on Emmanuel Street, Odili Road, when she was allegedly followed and attacked by armed assailants riding a tricycle, commonly known as a “Keke.” The attackers reportedly opened fire, and Basington sustained gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a hospital but died while receiving treatment.

Her body has been deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy, and the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive probe.

CSP Iringe-Koko assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and that those responsible would be brought to justice. She urged residents to provide any information that could aid the investigation and promised timely updates as it progresses.
