2027: Why Tinubu Should Be Worried — ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said President Bola Tinubu should be worried about his political future ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that his recent remarks dismissing opposition threats reflect anxiety rather than confidence.

In a statement, the party argued that the President’s position shows growing detachment from the realities facing Nigerians.

“What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens,” the statement read.

The ADC accused the administration of prioritising political exchanges over urgent national concerns, especially the worsening economic situation.

It said, “At a time when families are battling a historic cost-of-living crisis, food inflation, rising debt burdens, and collapsing purchasing power, the President chose to mock the opposition instead of addressing the suffering of Nigerians.”

The party also referenced recent insecurity incidents, including reported abductions, to highlight what it described as the deteriorating security situation.

“Even as he spoke, reports of children being abducted from examination centres were circulating. This is the reality of today’s Nigeria, insecurity spreading deeper into everyday life while government appears distracted,” it added.

According to the ADC, these challenges are enough reason for the President to be politically concerned, insisting that Nigerians are determined to vote for change in 2027.

“These are the reasons he should be scared, because the people are determined to vote him out,” it said.

The opposition party also dismissed claims questioning the legitimacy of its national convention, insisting it was properly conducted.

“We did not hold our convention on the street. If that was the story supplied to the President by agents of disruption, then he has been misinformed,” it stated.

It further accused the administration of limiting political participation, alleging that opposition parties face restrictions in accessing public facilities.

“No government before now had denied political parties fair access to public venues such as Eagle Square, a national civic ground that belongs to all Nigerians,” the statement said.

The ADC also criticised what it described as executive overreach, warning against the President’s involvement in interpreting or commenting on judicial matters.

“The President also cannot preach separation of powers while simultaneously assuming the role of interpreter of the law, political referee, and commentator on judicial matters,” it said, adding that “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be a President and a judge at the same time.”

Reaffirming its position, the party said Nigeria’s core challenges remain unresolved, noting that hardship, insecurity, rising debt, and declining public hope continue to worsen, while pledging to offer Nigerians an alternative ahead of the next general election.
