The United States Central Command has confirmed that American naval forces have successfully enforced a blockade in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, turning back multiple vessels attempting to pass through the waterway.
In a statement, CENTCOM on X Wednesday disclosed that an Iranian-flagged cargo ship was intercepted after attempting to evade the blockade. The vessel had departed from Bandar Abbas, exited the Strait of Hormuz, and was navigating along Iran’s coastline before it was redirected.
According to the statement, the guided-missile destroyer, USS Spruance (DDG 111), carried out the operation, forcing the cargo vessel to reverse course and head back toward Iranian waters.
The command added that the latest interception brings the total number of vessels turned around to ten since the blockade began on Monday. It emphasized that no ship has successfully breached the restriction so far.
“Ten vessels have now been turned around, and zero ships have broken through since the start of the U.S. blockade,” the statement said.
Recall that US president Donald Trump had announced the blockade, which led to crude oil prices surging above $100 per barrel.
Iran had earlier warned the US of severe consequences over the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, and any disruption in the area is likely to have significant implications for global energy supplies and regional security.
