At least 69 people lost their lives in road accidents across Lagos State in the first quarter of 2026, raising fresh concerns over safety on the state’s busy road network.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, disclosed that an additional 246 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries within the same period, reflecting the continued human toll of traffic violations and crashes.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, revealed the figures during an interview on Sunday, noting that officials attended to over 600 accident scenes between January and March.
Bakare-Oki further stated that the authority addressed widespread infractions involving heavy-duty vehicles, resolving more than 900 violations linked to trucks and articulated vehicles.
He added that enforcement operations were significantly intensified during the period, with about 4,900 physical patrol and intervention exercises conducted across the state, while technology-based monitoring systems recorded 17,942 traffic offences.
According to him, the agency maintains a strict stance against traffic violations.
“LASTMA has zero tolerance for traffic infractions,” he said, explaining that vehicles impounded for violations are promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.
Despite the figures, Bakare-Oki noted that improvements had been recorded in traffic management and operational efficiency.
“For the first quarter, we have been able to improve our service delivery, particularly in reducing travel time for Lagos residents.
“We carried out a comprehensive overhaul of traffic equipment and recovery vehicles, strategically repositioning them to enhance response time to incidents.
“In terms of personnel, we commenced training and re-orientation programmes aimed at improving service delivery,” he said.
The LASTMA boss also disclosed plans to strengthen workforce capacity through an extensive training initiative.
“We are planning to train over 1,000 personnel, and the process has already begun through both internal and external programmes.
“We have engaged consultants for specialised training, and in the coming months, we will intensify high-level capacity-building initiatives for all staff,” he added.
