The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the significance of the recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, describing it as a gathering preoccupied with attacking the ruling party rather than presenting Nigerians with alternative ideas for governance.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, made the remarks on Sunday while speaking on Sunday Politics, a current affairs programme on Channels Television.
According to Morka, discussions at the summit largely revolved around criticisms of the APC, which he characterised as “simply a rehash of all of the really reckless, baseless and unfounded allegations against the APC.
“When they the coalition huddled together in that hall in Ibadan, you’d think that they’d spend time to talk about themselves and the plans they have for Nigeria. But yet again, just like they did with the so-called ADC National Convention, they continued to obsess over the APC, it was a discussion about the APC,” he said
The APC spokesman maintained that the internal strategies or alliances of opposition parties were of no concern to the ruling party, stressing that the APC remained focused on contesting future elections.
“Whether they come together under one candidate or not is entirely their business. When the time comes, we will participate vigorously in the election, and they should prepare as well,” he added.
Morka also took aim at leading opposition figures, accusing former vice president Atiku Abubakar of contributing to the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He alleged that Atiku’s emergence as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate violated its zoning principles and triggered internal divisions.
“The PDP is in crisis today because Atiku Abubakar secured the party’s presidential ticket in violation of its rotational arrangement. Instead of addressing the fallout, he moved on to another platform,” Morka claimed.
He further criticised Peter Obi, alleging that the former presidential candidate had a pattern of moving between parties in search of favourable ticket arrangements rather than building political structures.
According to him, “Peter Obi is perpetually shopping for a party where he can clinch, you know, tickets uncontested. He does not want to build a party, he cannot build a party, he is not interested in building a party. His is to simply search around, snatch a ticket to run the presidential election.”
