Former Ivorian international footballer Aboulaye Traore, has been sentenced to three years in prison following a rape conviction, according to an Ivorian women’s rights organisation.
The ruling was delivered by a court in Bouaké. The Ivorian League for Women’s Rights described the verdict as a “significant advance in the fight against impunity for sexual and sexist violence.”
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Traore to pay 15 million CFA francs (approximately $26,700) in damages to the victim. He was also banned from entering the country’s central region for five years.
A judicial source confirmed that the former striker was found guilty of non-consensual sexual relations with a 21-year-old woman in March 2021.
Known by his nickname “Ben Badi,” Traore was part of the Ivory Coast squad that won the 1992 African Cup of Nations. He also enjoyed a successful club career, playing for ASEC Mimosas, as well as European sides FC Metz and S.C. Braga.
