Indian man exhumes sister's skeleton and carries it to bank to prove death

A desperate man in Odisha’s Keonjhar district has stunned locals after exhuming his sister’s skeletal remains and carrying them three kilometres to a bank to prove her death.

Jitu Munda, a member of a local tribal community with no formal education, resorted to the extreme measure after being repeatedly denied access to the 19,300 rupees (approximately $203) remaining in his late sister’s account.

Jitu’s sister, Kakra Munda, passed away two months ago.

Having already lost her husband and only child, Jitu is her sole surviving relative.

However, when he first approached the Odisha Gramin Bank in Mallipasi to retrieve the funds, the bank manager reportedly refused the request, insisting that either the account holder be present or Jitu provide formal legal heir documentation.

Paperwork over compassion

Struggling to navigate the complex legal requirements for a death certificate or succession papers, Jitu went to the village cremation ground on Monday.
