Tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified on the 16th day of a fragile ceasefire, as Tehran announced plans to impose tolls on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz while negotiations over its nuclear programme remain deadlocked.
Washington renewed its demand that Tehran surrender its stockpile of enriched uranium, with the White House insisting Iran is obligated to comply despite the continuation of the ceasefire and existing economic sanctions.
The White House said US President Donald Trump had put forward what he described as a âgenerous offerâ, urging Tehran to deliver a unified response.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Tehran âalways welcomes dialogue and agreementâ, but warned that ongoing sanctions and threats remain the principal obstacle to meaningful negotiations.

Iranian officials denied reports of imminent talks with Washington, with sources stating that Tehranâs refusal to return to the negotiating table at this stage remains unchanged. The Tasnim News Agency cited officials as confirming that Iranâs position on negotiations is firm.
Meanwhile, President Trump signalled that a new round of talks could begin soon, suggesting progress may come in the near term. Pakistani sources also pointed to the possibility of âpositive newsâ within the next 36 to 72 hours.
Iranâs ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irvani, said Tehran would be prepared to enter negotiations in Islamabad once what he described as a US naval blockade is lifted, arguing that any dialogue requires an end to what he called violations of the ceasefire.
He added that the timing of any future talks would depend on developments on the ground and the removal of sanctions imposed on Iran.
