The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert warning Nigerians about the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in the market.
In a statement released on Sunday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint concerning the distribution of the products in Kaduna State, prompting an immediate investigation.
According to NAFDAC, enforcement officials traced the products to a retail outlet, where two suspected counterfeit variants branded as “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g” were discovered.
The shop owner reportedly claimed the items were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative but failed to provide any proof of purchase.
NAFDAC warned that the products have not undergone the agency’s mandatory regulatory checks and quality assurance processes, posing potential health risks to consumers.
Further findings revealed that the products—also labelled as “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g”—lack essential identification markers such as batch numbers and NAFDAC registration numbers.
The items are purportedly manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with manufacturing dates listed as August 2025 and expiry dates in August 2029.
The agency confirmed that the counterfeit products have been removed from circulation, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for their distribution.
NAFDAC has since directed its zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to intensify surveillance efforts and ensure the complete removal of the fake products from the market.
It urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant by verifying the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase or use.
Members of the public are advised to report suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or email sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
Healthcare professionals and consumers are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions linked to such products through NAFDAC’s official reporting platforms, including its website and the Med-Safety mobile application.
