The European Commission has approved a €235 million humanitarian assistance package for West and Central Africa, with Nigeria expected to receive about €33 million to support vulnerable communities affected by ongoing crises across the region.
The funding targets populations impacted by armed conflicts, displacement, food insecurity and climate-related shocks, including host communities and those in hard-to-reach areas. The breakdown shows €75 million allocated to the Central Sahel, over €72 million to Chad, €33 million to Nigeria, €22 million to the Central African Republic, more than €16.6 million to Cameroon, €4.8 million to Mauritania, and over €6 million to coastal countries, alongside an additional €6.4 million for regional humanitarian initiatives.
European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said the region is currently facing overlapping humanitarian pressures driven by insecurity, poverty and climate shocks. “West and Central Africa is facing a storm of humanitarian crises,” she said, noting that millions depend on aid for basic survival needs including food, water, shelter and healthcare.
She added that the European Union remains committed to sustaining life-saving interventions while supporting long-term stability. “The European Union will continue to stand as a reliable partner to save lives and bring hope.”
The Commission identified the Central Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin as key epicentres of the crisis, with displacement spreading across borders into coastal states. It also highlighted worsening conditions linked to the Sudan conflict affecting eastern Chad, alongside persistent emergencies in north-west Nigeria and parts of Cameroon and the Central African Republic.
Press and Information Officer, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Modestus Chukwulaka, said the EU’s intervention reinforces its commitment to addressing urgent humanitarian needs while strengthening resilience in affected communities.
