Former Abia State governor and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed claims suggesting interference by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Nigeria’s electoral process, describing the allegations as unfounded.
Speaking on Monday, April 21, 2026, during a media chat in Abuja, Kalu said there is no credible evidence to support accusations that INEC is being manipulated or influenced by external forces.
In his statement Sen. Uzo Kalu said “INEC is doing its job within the limits of the law. People should stop making baseless claims about interference when they have no proof”.
The lawmaker, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, stressed that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when institutions are allowed to function independently without unnecessary political pressure or public distrust fueled by speculation.
Kalu also urged political actors and stakeholders to focus on strengthening the electoral system through constructive engagement rather than spreading narratives that could undermine public confidence.
He added that “If there are concerns, they should be addressed through proper legal and institutional channels, not through unverified public accusations”.
