The police on Tuesday arraigned a 28-year-old man, Tolani Adeshina, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged housebreaking and stealing of goods worth N3.9 million.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of housebreaking, stealing, and malicious damage.
The police prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offences on April 19 at about 1.00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant and others at large broke and entered the dwelling house of one Ikeolu Bosede and stole one Samsung Gold 5 valued at N1.5 million.
Other stolen items include jewellery worth N1 million, three wristwatches valued at N300,000, two power banks valued at N150,000, and a cash sum of N500,000.
He also alleged that the defendant maliciously damaged the complainant’s fence valued at N500,000.
He said the total value of stolen and damaged items amounted to N3.9 million, belonging to the complainant.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 322(a)(b), 302(1)(a), and 354(1)(b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Oluwafemi Alabi, urged the court to grant bail, assuring that the defendant would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until June 2 for hearing. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
