Police Probe Tragic Stampede That Killed Three at Ekiti Hotel

The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of three individuals at a hotel in Ikere-Ekiti.

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye, following the early-morning incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on April 19, 2026, at Emirate Hotel.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, the victims included a hotel staff member and two students of Bamidele Olumiluwa University of Education, Science and Technology.

Preliminary findings indicate that the students had gathered at the hotel to celebrate their convocation ceremony held a day earlier. The celebration reportedly turned chaotic after a disagreement between two unidentified students escalated into a physical altercation.

As panic spread, other attendees attempted to flee the scene, leading to a stampede that resulted in the fatalities.

The police confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.

While expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the police commissioner assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. He also urged residents to remain calm as efforts continue to uncover the full details of the tragedy.
