President Bola Tinubu has applauded Nigeria’s aviation sector following the country’s attainment of a 91.45 per cent safety rating from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
In a statement issued today by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the rating as a significant milestone that reflects the country’s growing compliance with international aviation safety standards.

The ICAO, a United Nations agency responsible for regulating global air navigation, conducted the assessment under its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP). The program evaluates member states’ ability to manage aviation safety risks through Effective Implementation (EI) scores.
According to the report, Nigeria achieved its highest-ever EI score of 91.45 per cent during the latest audit conducted at the headquarters of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority in Abuja.
This figure places Nigeria well above both the West African regional average of 61.1 per cent and the global average of 70.4 per cent.
President Tinubu noted that the achievement aligns with his administration’s broader agenda of strengthening infrastructure and positioning the aviation sector as a key driver of economic growth. He reiterated the government’s commitment to building a safe, secure, and efficient air transport system capable of competing globally.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had earlier outlined a five-point agenda for the sector, with strict adherence to safety regulations as its foremost priority.
Tinubu commended the ministry and relevant agencies for the feat, stating that the improved rating would boost investor confidence and enhance Nigeria’s credibility in international aviation.
He, however, urged stakeholders not to be complacent, emphasizing the need to implement all ICAO recommendations to sustain and further improve the country’s safety performance.
