President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to strengthen investment in modern law enforcement systems, including enhanced police training, intelligence gathering, and improved infrastructure, as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.
The President made this known on Tuesday at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession held in Abuja, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful progress without a secure environment, noting that the government has a moral obligation to empower security agencies responsible for safeguarding lives and property.
“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” he said.
The President revealed that his administration will sustain investments in capacity development, modern technology, intelligence systems, and improved welfare for police personnel as part of ongoing reforms.
He described security as “the first currency of progress,” emphasizing that Nigeria must strengthen those tasked with protecting the nation.
Tinubu also paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as part of the nation’s enduring moral heritage, while extending condolences to their families.
Calling for professionalism and accountability, the President urged officers to uphold the rule of law, noting that the police uniform represents a “covenant of service” rather than an instrument of power.
He further highlighted the importance of community policing, stating that trust and collaboration between citizens and law enforcement are essential to combating insecurity.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, acknowledged public expectations and pledged to build a more disciplined, accountable, and professional police force.
Disu assured that the leadership of the force would support officers who uphold the law while taking a firm stance against misconduct and indiscipline.
The event featured tactical displays, march pasts, and processions by various police units and cadets, marking the grand finale of the 2026 National Police Day celebration.
Dignitaries at the event included state officials, service chiefs, former Inspectors-General of Police, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of financial institutions, who commended the police for their role in maintaining national security.
