The University of Jos (UniJos) has dismissed allegations by former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, describing them as entirely false and without merit.
Speaking on behalf of the institution, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Francis Kwede, said the claims were unfounded and aimed at damaging Amupitan’s reputation. He expressed surprise over Dalung’s remarks, insisting they lacked any factual basis.
Dalung had earlier accused Amupitan of corruption and unethical conduct during his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Law, alleging that he manipulated academic results and lacked the integrity required to oversee credible elections in 2027.
However, Kwede firmly refuted the accusations, stating that no such malpractice ever occurred within the faculty. He specifically addressed claims that results of 16 students from the 2009/2010 academic session were altered, noting that there was no evidence to support such allegations. According to him, no instance of result manipulation had been recorded before or after that period.
Kwede further highlighted reforms introduced by Amupitan during his time as Dean, including the adoption of Excel-based result computation, which replaced manual processes. He said the innovation improved efficiency, reduced errors, and ensured timely processing of students’ results, enabling graduates to meet deadlines for the Nigerian Law School.
The university maintained that Amupitan conducted himself with integrity and professionalism throughout his service. It urged the public to disregard Dalung’s claims, describing them as politically motivated and intended to tarnish the image of both the INEC chairman and the institution.
