Viral video footage believed to show Syria’s infamous Saydnaya prison, one of the worst torture centers used by the ousted regime, have revealed further details from inside the notorious facility, Anadolu reports.
The videos, posted by unknown individuals and believed to be from surveillance cameras, show various sections of the prison during the period of the Assad regime, which was deposed in December 2024.
The recordings include areas believed to be a waiting room and a camera monitoring center.
The images show more than 20 people sitting crouched on the ground with their heads bowed inside an enclosed space described as a waiting room.
Another image shows a room with multiple screens, believed to have been used as a control center for managing the prison.
Saydnaya Prison, located north of the capital Damascus, is considered one of the worst military prisons in Syria.
After the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in 2011, the prison became a center where thousands of people were detained for allegedly opposing the regime.
The prison has been repeatedly mentioned in reports by international human rights groups over the torture and ill-treatment that took place inside its walls.
A 2017 report by Amnesty International said that around 13,000 people were secretly executed in the prison between 2011 and 2015.
Syrian authorities have repeatedly announced the arrests of individuals accused of abuses against civilians during the conflict between 2011 and 2024, describing such steps as part of efforts to pursue accountability.
In December 2024, Bashar Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s decades of rule that began in 1963. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January 2025.
