A windstorm has blown-off the roofs and destroyed buildings at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko, Paikoro local government area of Niger State while the orientation on new corps members is ongoing.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the windstorm occurred at the weekend with buildings occupied by the corp members currently in camp completely destroyed by the .A source hinted that though the corp members were inside the buildings when the incident occurred, there was no loss of life or injury recorded.
The affected buildings as confirmed by officials were the male corps members’ hostels, the Multi-Purpose Hall, the kitchen, the staff quarters and some parts of the state coordinator’s residence.
Consequently, the state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has directed the secretary to the state government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, to work closely with the Ministries of Work, Youth and Social Development to ensure the immediate fixing of the affected buildings.
The governor described the incident as unfortunate while maintaining that the incident has no doubt put both the corps members and their camp officials in an unpleasant situation.
The governor observed that the immediate fixing of the affected facilities in the camp would help the corps members to continue with their orientation course.
He commended the assessment team and the Principal of the Abubakar Dada Secondary School, Paiko, for collaborating to swiftly provide some classrooms as temporary accommodation for the affected corps members in the school.
The governor reassured the NYSC of his determination to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all corps members serving in the state.
