The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, has urged governors of Old Eastern Nigeria, particularly those from the South-East region, to declare every 30th of May a day of mourning for victims of the 1967-1970 civil war.
The OYC in a statement it issued on Tuesday, also urged Igbos across the world to wear black on May 30 to mourn victims of what it described as genocide against the Igbos during the civil war.
The OYC statement which was signed by its National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, and the Secretary-General, Ifeanyichukwu Nweke, advised the people of old Eastern region to honour the victims of the civil war on May 30, 2026 by closing their business outlets.
“Igbo Governors and other leaders have abandoned the observance of Biafra Hero’s Day, a sombre memorial of the tragic period in Ndigbo’s history, specifically the Biafra Genocide 1967-1970,” the statement said.
The group noted that the Yoruba proudly commemorate the virtues and ill-treatment of Moshood Abiola on June 12 of every year but Igbo political leaders fail to organize such event in honour of their people that died in the civil war.
The OYC executives predicted that past and current political office holders who worked against the interest of the Igbos would lose in 2027 election through what it called “political Tsunami”.

take a reconciliatory steps on May 29, 2026 by releasing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and and other detained members of pro-Biafra groups.
