Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has called on Nigerians to build a caring society where every child feels included and supported, saying none of them must be left behind.
Oborevwori made the call on Wednesday in Asaba during the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration.
He was represented by his deputy, Mr Monday Onyeme.
The governor said the 2026 theme, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” underscores the need to ensure that every child matters and has equal access to opportunities, particularly in education.
He stressed that children deserve access to education, healthcare and protection, regardless of gender, background or physical condition.
“Children’s Day is a time to celebrate our children, who remain the pride and future of our state and nation,” he said.
Oborevwori added that no child should feel abandoned, rejected or denied opportunities to succeed in life.
“As parents, teachers and leaders, we must create a supportive society where every child can grow and thrive,” he said.
He urged residents to encourage children living with disabilities and to recognise their talents and abilities.
The governor commended the You Matter Charity Foundation, a pet project of his wife, Tobore Oborevwori, for supporting children with autism and special needs across the state.
He also highlighted the achievement of 15-year-old Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, who earned a Guinness World Record through autism awareness art.
“His achievement proves that disability is not inability when children receive love, support and opportunity,” he said.
Oborevwori advised children to remain focused on their education, respect their parents and teachers, and work diligently towards their aspirations.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to invest in programmes that promote child welfare.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Pat Ajudua, praised the state government for implementing policies that promote the wellbeing and protection of children.
Ajudua said the administration had continued to introduce initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children and expanding opportunities for their growth and development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured a colourful march-past by pupils and students from public and private schools across the state, as well as the ceremonial cutting of the Children’s Day anniversary cake. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
