Nigeria’s presence in women’s professional boxing has reached a new milestone, with four female fighters now ranked among the world’s best in the WBC’s May 2026 ratings. The unprecedented feat places Nigerian boxers in the top 10 of three different weight divisions, signaling a major shift for the sport in the country.
At the forefront is featherweight sensation Elizabeth Oshoba, ranked No. 4. Undefeated in 10 professional bouts—six by knockout—the 26-year-old made history in January 2024 when she became the first Nigerian woman to claim a world title, defeating Michela Braga for the WBC Silver featherweight belt in Copenhagen.
Her most recent victory came on April 5, a stunning third-round stoppage of Chelsey Arnell just 42 seconds into the round. Before turning pro in 2022, Oshoba had already amassed six national amateur titles, an African Games bronze, and a Commonwealth Games silver—Nigeria’s first boxing medal at the event since 2006.
Toyin Adejumola, who trained alongside Oshoba at Smart Boxing Gym in Ilogbo, Ogun State, is ranked 10th in the middleweight division. She remains unbeaten with a record of eight wins, six knockouts, and one draw.
The heavyweight ranks feature two Nigerians: Celina Agwu at No. 5, boasting eight wins—all by knockout—and just one loss, making her one of Africa’s most feared punchers. Meanwhile, Bolatito Oluwole, nicknamed “Black Tito,” holds the No. 9 spot with 11 wins (seven KOs) and two losses.
Oluwole first gained national attention after winning the N1 million Best Boxer prize at GOtv Boxing Night 29, a victory that underscored the rising stature of women in the domestic scene.
Just a few years ago, having even one Nigerian woman in the global rankings seemed a distant dream. That four now stand among the elite is a testament to grassroots investment and a new generation of athletes pushing boundaries.
