The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has strongly condemned a violent attack on the personnel of the Corps by an armed motorist, later identified as an operative of the Department of State Services(DSS), during a routine traffic enforcement operation in Abuja.
A statement on Friday issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, explained that the ugly incident, which has stirred concern over inter-agency conduct and discipline, occurred at about 3:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command of the FRSC.
Ohaeri, a Deputy Corps Commander, explained that the confrontation began when an enforcement team on routine patrol flagged down a Toyota Carina driver for a suspected traffic violation.
Rather than comply with lawful directives, the driver refused to stop and proceeded dangerously until he was eventually held up by traffic close to the Command.
He explained that upon approaching the vehicle to conduct routine checks on the driver’s documents and vehicle particulars, the suspect became hostile and verbally aggressive, resisting all lawful enforcement procedures.
“Despite several tactical and professional attempts by FRSC personnel to de-escalate the situation, the offender escalated the confrontation by physically advancing toward officers and later drawing a pistol, which he fired twice within the vicinity of the Command,” Ohaeri said.
He said the Corps personnel, faced with imminent danger to lives and property, demonstrated “remarkable restraint, professionalism, and tactical discipline” in handling the situation.
According to him, “In the face of imminent danger, FRSC personnel acted with remarkable restraint, professionalism, and tactical discipline to swiftly disarm the assailant without loss of life.
“One Marshal sustained minor bruises during the process.”
Following the disarmament, the Public Education Officer of the FRSC said the suspect was immediately handed over to the Nigeria Police Force at the Life Camp Police Station.
“Authorities also recovered the firearm, ammunition components, and the vehicle involved in the incident.
“Preliminary investigations later identified the suspect as a personnel of the DSS, with the case subsequently transferred to the appropriate State Command for further investigation,” the statement said.
Reacting to the development, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, commended the conduct of FRSC operatives at the scene, praising their courage and professionalism in the face of provocation.
He said, “The personnel displayed commendable maturity and discipline, ensuring that the situation did not degenerate into chaos, despite growing public outrage at the scene.”
The FRSC boss stressed that no individual is above the law, regardless of his rank or institutional affiliation.
He stated unequivocally, “No individual, regardless of status, rank, or agency affiliation, is above the law.
“Security personnel are expected to lead by example through compliance with established traffic regulations and respect for constituted authority.”
Mohammed further warned against the misuse of firearms and official status, describing such actions as unacceptable and dangerous.
“Firearms and official status must never be used as instruments of intimidation against law enforcement officers carrying out legitimate duties,” he said.
He also called for stronger collaboration among security agencies, emphasising the importance of mutual respect and operational discipline.
“The Corps therefore calls on all security agencies to continue strengthening inter-agency cooperation, mutual respect, and operational discipline in the collective interest of national security and public safety,” the statement added.
