The Iba Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Friday marked the Children’s Day with One Day Unit Command featuring School children
The theme of the event was tagged: “Advancing Children’s Rights and future”.
Speaking on the theme, Mrs Oriyomi Savage, the Unit Commander, Iba Unit of FRSC said it reminds everyone that every child deserves protection, education, good health, love, and a safe environment to grow and succeed.
According to her, children are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are also valuable members of society today.
“Every child has the right to life and safety on our roads. Sadly, many accidents involving children occur because of careless driving, speeding, overloading, dangerous road crossing, and lack of proper supervision.
“Some children also risk their lives by playing on highways or failing to obey traffic rules.
“As responsible adults, parents, teachers, drivers, and community leaders, we must work together to protect our children by teaching them basic traffic rules.
“We should ensure they use pedestrian bridges and zebra crossings avoid over-speeding around schools and residential areas.
“They should use seat belts and child restraints where necessary; and serve as good examples through responsible road use,” she said.
The unit commander urged children to always obey traffic signs, look left and right before crossing the road, avoid running across highways, and never distract drivers while they are driving.
Also speaking, Miss Shaniqua Felix, a 9-year-old, Primary six pupil of Keyonnaville Schools, Afro-media, Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos, who was appointed as the One-Day Unit Commander Ambassador said
Children’s day is a Very Special day dedicated entirely to celebrating the most precious, gift of our Lives : Our children.
“To Our Amazing children ,it is a day to Celebrate our bundless energy, your infectious laughter, your Creativity and endless dreams.
“We are not just the future of our society, we are vibrant and boundless potential of the most precious member of our Society.
“As we all know children Day is a beautiful reminder that the Joy children bring into our lives, as the saying goes ” Children are like buds in a garden.
“We should be carefully and lovingly nurtured as we are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.
“Today we celebrate not just our innocence but also the bright and promising futures we are building,” she said.
A total of nine schools participated in the event, with each school represented by approximately 15–19 students. The event also recorded participation from children of staff.
The activities were designed to educate and engage the children in a fun and interactive manner while reinforcing key road safety messages.
Some of the activities include talk on Advancing Children’s Rights and Futures, Game 1 – “Guess the Word, Cutting of the Children’s Day Cake and Game 2 – “Bottle Stack”
Others are Quiz competition inauguration of Road Safety Club and Road Signs Presentation.
Some stakeholders at the event include the State Coordinator, SM Dr. Dennis Olabisi (Lagos) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Iba Divisional Headquarters, represented by DSC A. Mbanoun
Others are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Nigeria Police Force, Okokomaiko Division, represented by DSP Paul Eche, the Director of Keyonnaville Schools, represented by Mrs C. Ikwugwu, Special Marshals of RS2.18 Iba Unit Command.
“We also have staff of RS2.18 Iba Unit Command, Parents and teachers of Keyonnaville School and other invited schools.”
