PORT HARCOURT – Two prominent figures in Rivers State politics, Sir Siminalayi Fubara and Tonye Cole, have withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries, both citing the need to preserve party unity, strengthen internal cohesion, and promote collective progress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a personally signed statement, Fubara announced his withdrawal from the APC gubernatorial primaries scheduled for today, describing the decision as difficult but necessary and rooted in the broader interest of Rivers State.
He said the move followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with family, friends, and associates, stressing that leadership often requires sacrifice and the subordination of personal ambition to the greater good.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.
Fubara also expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices, acknowledging the disappointment the decision may cause, while insisting that his actions were guided by the overriding interest of the state. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving Rivers people.
Meanwhile, Tonye Cole also formally withdrew from the APC governorship primary, citing party supremacy, unity, and the need to present a cohesive front ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his statement, Cole said the decision followed a critical stakeholders’ meeting convened by the party’s national leadership, where discussions centred on strengthening unity within the Rivers APC and ensuring electoral competitiveness.
