The Leader of the Action Peoples Party (APP) Caucus in the House of Representatives Representative Ikenga Ugochinyere, has appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), including its National Leader and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), not to deny nomination tickets to members of the House of Representatives whose decision to join the party at its formative stage significantly enhanced its visibility, credibility, and public acceptance.
Ugochinyere stressed that the sacrifices made by early entrants into the party must be recognized and rewarded, noting that individuals such as Hon. Uche Okonkwo and other serving lawmakers played critical roles in building the party’s structure and strengthening its standing within the opposition movement.
According to him, any attempt to sideline or deny deserving members the opportunity to contest under the party’s platform would send the wrong signal to loyal party faithful and could undermine the unity required to build a formidable opposition coalition ahead of future elections.
“The sacrifices of those who joined the party when it was still finding its footing must not be forgotten. Their commitment, courage, and contributions helped to elevate the party’s profile nationally. Such loyalty deserves recognition and respect,” Ugochinyere stated.
The opposition chieftain further disclosed that he intends to seek an audience with the NDC leadership to present compelling reasons why the party must uphold fairness, reward loyalty, and protect the interests of performing lawmakers who have remained steadfast in advancing the party’s ideals.
He warned that denying tickets to committed members could weaken opposition solidarity and create unnecessary divisions at a time when unity and consolidation of progressive forces are most needed.
“We need unity and the consolidation of all available political energy if we are to achieve victory. The opposition family must not treat loyal and performing members in any humiliating manner. Justice, fairness, and inclusiveness must remain the guiding principles of our collective struggle,” he added.
Ugochinyere therefore urged the party leadership to act in the interest of unity, equity, and political stability by ensuring that the victories and aspirations of loyal members are protected and respected.
