Inuwa Reaffirms Support For Stronger Quality Infrastructure To Drive Nigeria’s Industrial Growth

Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa, Chairman, Standards Council,Standards Organisation of Nigeria(SON),has reaffirmed the commitment of the Council to strengthening Nigeria’s quality infrastructure as Nigeria marked the 2026 World Metrology Day under the theme “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making.”
Speaking at the 2026 World Metrology Day celebration in Abuja, Inuwa, pointed out that accurate measurement systems are critical to effective governance, industrial growth, and public trust.
On the essence of the event, he said: “Today’s celebration therefore goes beyond technical discussions about measurements. It is about national development, economic credibility, industrial growth, and public trust.
“The theme for this year, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” reflects the growing importance of accurate measurement systems in shaping effective governance and sustainable economic planning.
“In every modern economy, policies are expected to deliver measurable outcomes. Whether in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, telecommunications, environmental management, or trade, decisions are only as reliable as the data and measurements upon which they are based.
“Accurate measurements create confidence in systems, institutions, products, and services.”
He noted that in every modern economy, policy outcomes depend on the reliability of data and measurements.
“For Nigeria, this conversation is particularly relevant as the nation continues to pursue industrialisation, economic diversification, and increased participation in regional and global trade.
“Building globally competitive industries requires more than production capacity. It requires consistency, precision, traceability, and compliance with internationally accepted standards,” he said.
He highlighted SON’s work in calibration, testing, conformity assessment, standards development, and quality assurance as essential to safer products, improved industrial efficiency, reduced trade barriers, and stronger consumer protection.
The Chairman pledged the Council’s continued support for investments in technical infrastructure, laboratory development, human capacity building, and stakeholder collaboration to keep Nigeria’s quality ecosystem globally relevant.
Inuwa further assured SON’s Director General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, of the Council’s full support in advancing standardisation and enhancing the competitiveness of Nigerian products and services.
He called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, industries, academia, development partners, and the private sector to build a stronger culture of quality and standards in Nigeria.
Recall that World Metrology Day is celebrated annually on 20 May to raise awareness of the role of measurement in scientific discovery, innovation, industrial manufacturing, and quality of life.
