Obafemi Awolowo Foundation Opens applications For future Leaders Fellowship Across Africa, Diaspora

The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has announced the commencement of applications for the Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Future Leaders Fellowship Programme, a merit based initiative aimed at grooming a new generation of ethical and transformational leaders across Africa, the Caribbean and the global diaspora.
The Foundation said the programme, inspired by the ideals and leadership legacy of late Chief Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ, SAN, GCFR, seeks to equip young people with the values, discipline, knowledge and skills needed to make meaningful contributions to society.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Foundation disclosed that the Fellowship is open to applicants between the ages of 20 and 35.
It noted that the initiative represents its commitment to shifting “from celebrating history to shaping the future,” while building leaders driven by integrity, excellence, service and social impact.
The Foundation recalled that the Fellowship was first unveiled during the 2026 Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Memorial Lecture held on March 6, explaining that the programme draws inspiration from Awolowo’s long standing commitment to principled governance, social justice and human development through education.
According to the statement, many young people across Africa are confronted by economic uncertainty and widening social inequalities despite being talented, innovative and globally connected.
It stressed that what is often lacking is structured support, mentorship and a leadership framework rooted in strong values that can help convert potential into lasting impact.
“The programme aims to build a vibrant pan African network of future leaders who embody integrity, excellence and service, while fostering an alumni community that will continue to grow in influence and impact,” the Foundation stated.
The Fellowship, it added, was designed to bridge the gap between Awolowo’s leadership philosophy and the realities of modern governance, public service, entrepreneurship and social development.
Selected participants will undergo leadership development sessions, mentorship, personal effectiveness training, collaborative learning and practical problem solving exercises focused on addressing real world societal challenges.
The inaugural edition of the Fellowship is scheduled to run for eight weeks beginning October 4, 2026, with virtual sessions holding every Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nigerian time.
The Foundation emphasised that admission into the programme would be strictly merit based, with applicants expected to submit a personal statement and provide two referees as part of the application process.
Interested applicants have been invited to apply through the Foundation’s portal, while applications will close on August 31, 2026.
The Foundation also advised prospective candidates seeking additional information to contact the Programme Coordinator through its designated email channels.
